Two Ways to Reach the Falls

One of the coolest things about Stewart Falls is that you can choose your own adventure.

Option 1: Hike from the Aspen Grove Trailhead

This is the more traditional route. Starting near the entrance to the Alpine Loop, the trail from Aspen Grove is about 3.5 miles round trip, with moderate elevation gain and plenty of tree-covered sections to keep things cool in the summer. The trail is well-maintained and family-friendly, though good shoes are a must.

Option 2: Ride the Scenic Sundance Tram

If you’re in the mood for a unique experience, take the scenic chairlift from the Sundance Mountain Resort up to Ray’s Summit. From there, follow the trail signs for Stewart Falls. This route adds a fun twist to your hike and offers panoramic views of Provo Canyon, Sundance, and beyond. It’s a little longer depending on your starting point, but the lift ride alone is worth the trip.

No matter which route you take, the hike is filled with moments that make you stop and say wow. In the early summer, wildflowers bloom like everywhere—paintbrush, lupine, and columbine color the hillsides. In the fall the changing leaves are gorgeous. You’ll wind through scenic meadows, aspen groves, and shady patches that open up to sweeping views of the canyon.

Once you reach Stewart Falls, get ready for an unforgettable sight. The waterfall tumbles down a cliff in two dramatic tiers, creating a cool mist that feels amazing after the hike. It’s the perfect spot to rest, snack, and snap a few photos.

Stewart Falls in the late Summer

The best times of year to hike Stewart Falls are late spring through early fall, when the trail is free of snow and the waterfall is at its most impressive. In late spring, snowmelt feeds the falls, creating a powerful cascade and vibrant greenery along the trail. Summer offers warm weather and easy access, making it a favorite for families and casual hikers. Fall is always a favorite because it has cooler temperatures and brilliant autumn colors.

While the trail is most popular during the warmer months, winter hiking is possible with snowshoes. Many adventurers enjoy snowshoeing to Stewart Falls for a peaceful, snowy landscape and a frozen version of the falls. However, winter conditions come with risks. If you’re venturing out in the winter, check avalanche forecasts and travel with proper gear and experience.
