The Horsetail Falls Trail wastes no time in getting scenic. From the beginning, you’re surrounded by trees and wildflowers (when in season). You can also hear the sound of Dry Creek bubbling nearby. The trail winds steadily upward, offering frequent glimpses of Alpine below and the peaks of the Wasatch above.

Midway through the hike, you’ll hit a steep incline that can be a bit of a quad-burner, but it’s nothing you can’t handle.

At the top, you’ll see Horsetail Falls—a stunning 50+ foot waterfall. Depending on the season, the flow can be anything from a roaring rush to a quiet trickle.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring (May–June): The falls are at their peak from snowmelt.
  • Summer (July–August): Wildflowers bloom, and the trail is drier. Start early to beat the heat and crowds.
  • Fall (September–October): Crisp air and stunning fall foliage make this a prime time to explore, but the flow is mild.
  • Winter: This trail becomes an icy adventure. Microspikes and trekking poles are strongly recommended if hiking in snow or ice.
