Edmaier’s Secret: A Place Too Beautiful to Share

Edmaier's Secret
Edmaier’s Secret

Edmaier’s Secret is a unique and colorful area located in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona, known for its vibrant and abstract sandstone formations. I can see why Edmaier wanted to keep this place a secret!  If you love playing on interesting rock formations, Edmaier’s Secret is like Disneyland.  You can observe, touch, hike, and climb on rocks all day here.  And if you want to explore even further, you can hike to Buckskin Gulch, Wire Pass, and beyond!

Directions to the Trailhead

From Page, Arizona, head west on Highway 89 to House Rock Valley Road.  From Kanab, Utah, head east on Highway 89 to House Rock Valley Road. The turn-off to House Rock Valley Road is very easy to miss.  I highly recommend using a navigation app such as Google Maps. Once you’re on House Rock Valley Road, drive approximately 4.5 miles to the Buckskin Trailhead on the left.

The hike to Edmaiers Secret is an easy 4.4 miles out and back trail.  From the Buckskin Trailhead, you immediately follow the wash.  You will follow this wash for about a mile and a half, then leave the wash and turn left to get to the Edmaiers Secret area.  There is no “Secret” formation, but you will know you’re in the right place because remarkable rocks are everywhere.  From here, the world is your playground.  You can explore anywhere you like.  When you’re ready to return to your car, you simply follow the wash the same way you came.

Be Prepared

When hiking in this area, it’s important to be well-prepared to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here’s a list of items you should consider taking:

  1. Water:
    • Bring an ample supply of water, especially if you’re hiking in the desert.
  2. Comfortable Hiking Shoes:
    • Wear sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes with good traction, as you will encounter uneven and sandy terrain.
  3. Sun Protection:
    • I recommend a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, a sun shirt, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun’s intense rays. There is very little shade in the area, and you will be exposed to the sun for the duration of your hike.
  4. Weather-Appropriate Clothing:
    • Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for the desert environment. Consider long sleeves and pants to protect against the sun and brush.
  5. Navigation Tools:
    • Bring a map, compass, or GPS device to help navigate the area. Edmaier’s Secret doesn’t have well-defined trails, so navigation skills can be valuable. Also, make sure you download everything, as cell service is limited.
  6. Snacks and Meals:
    • Pack energy-boosting snacks for a quick pick-me-up along the way.
  7. First Aid Kit:
    • Carry a basic first aid kit with essentials such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and personal medications.
  8. Camera:
    • Edmaier’s Secret is a visually stunning area, so don’t forget your camera to capture the vibrant colors and unique formations.
  9. Backpack:
    • Use a comfortable and appropriately sized backpack to carry your essentials.
  10. Emergency Essentials:
    • Have a fully charged cell phone, a whistle, and a flashlight with extra batteries for emergency situations.

Before embarking on your hike, check current trail conditions, weather forecasts, and any park advisories. Always let someone know your plans and expected return time, especially if you’re venturing into less-traveled areas.

Fun Facts

  • The name Edmaiers Secret came from Bernhard Edmaier, a German geologist and photographer who famously photographed the area.
  • The area is also known as Brown Pocket.  Many rock formations are similar to the nearby destination, White Pocket, but are brown.

The Best Time of Year to Visit Edmaier’s Secret

The best time to hike Edmaier’s Secret is during the cooler months, typically in the spring or fall. Consider the following factors when planning your visit:

  1. Spring (March to May):
    • Spring is an excellent time to explore Edmaier’s Secret. Temperatures are generally mild, and you can enjoy wildflowers in the area.
    • Spring offers pleasant hiking conditions before the temperatures rise to extreme levels in the summer.
  2. Fall (September to November):
    • Fall is another optimal time for hiking.
    • Fall also tends to have more stable weather conditions because the monsoon season is likely over.
  3. Summer (June to August):
    • Summer in the desert can be extremely hot, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 100°F (38°C) or more. Hiking during these months can be challenging and potentially dangerous.
    • There are also threats of flash floods, which are most common throughout July and August.
  4. Winter (December to February):
    • While winters in the region are generally mild compared to some northern areas, it can still get cold. Be prepared for cooler temperatures, especially during the night.
    • Winter may also bring occasional rain or snow, affecting trail conditions.

Before heading out, check the current weather forecast, trail conditions, and any park advisories.

Flash Flooding

To avoid dangerous flash flooding in southwest slot canyons, consider the following precautions:

  1. Check Weather Forecasts: Stay informed about the weather conditions in the region. Pay attention to flash flood warnings, severe weather alerts, and updates from local authorities.
  2. Avoid Rainy Periods: Flash floods are more likely during or after heavy rainfall. Try to plan your visit during dry seasons, and avoid slot canyons if rain is in the forecast or has occurred recently.
  3. Be Mindful of Seasonal Changes: Flash floods can be more common during certain seasons. Be aware of the weather patterns in the area, and plan your visit accordingly.
  4. Understand Local Geography: Familiarize yourself with the specific slot canyon you plan to visit. Learn about its drainage patterns, potential flood areas, and escape routes.
  5. Start Early: Begin your hike or exploration early in the day to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, which can be common in some regions.
  6. Tell Someone Your Plans: Inform a friend or family member about your itinerary, including the specific slot canyons you plan to explore and your expected return time. This can aid search and rescue efforts if needed.
  7. Heed Warning Signs: Obey posted warning signs and advisories. If an area is closed due to the risk of flash flooding, do not enter.

Remember that flash floods can be unpredictable and dangerous. Prioritize your safety, and if conditions become unfavorable, consider postponing your visit or choosing a different location. Always exercise caution and use your best judgment when exploring natural areas, especially those prone to flash flooding.
